Creativity and ADHD – Redefining What It Means to Be Creative

When most people hear the word “creativity,” they think of painting, writing, or creating something artistic. But what if I told you creativity isn’t limited to the arts? For those of us with ADHD, creativity can manifest in countless ways that are just as impactful, even if they don’t look like what society traditionally considers “creative.”

Hi, I’m Dr. Nichelle Dionne. I was diagnosed with ADHD Combination in February 2024, at the age of 56. Since then, I’ve been reflecting on how ADHD has shaped my life and work. One question I’ve asked myself repeatedly is: Why don’t I see myself as creative, even though creativity is often associated with ADHD? As I’ve explored this question, I’ve realized that my definition of creativity needed to expand—and maybe yours does too.

My Journey to Understanding ADHD Creativity

When I started learning about ADHD, I was struck by how often creativity was mentioned as a hallmark trait. Stories about ADHD artists, writers, and inventors are everywhere. And while I deeply admire those individuals, I couldn’t see myself in them. My career has been in technology. A Fields that feel structured and logical. Creativity wasn’t a word I would have used to describe myself.

But then I started reflecting on my experiences. Before becoming a professor, I worked as a software developer and a database designer. My daily tasks involved solving complex problems, troubleshooting errors, and designing efficient systems. That was creativity in action, even if I didn’t recognize it as such at the time.

Even earlier, as a high school junior, I discovered I had a knack for spotting errors in computer code—it was like the mistakes popped out at me. I also found creative ways to solve math problems, often coming up with approaches that weren’t taught in class but made perfect sense to me. These moments were my creativity shining through, though I didn’t label them as such.

Teaching – My Creative Canvas

As a professor, I’ve discovered even more ways my creativity shines. One of my strengths is the ability to adapt my teaching in real-time. I can look at a student and tell if they’re struggling with the material. When that happens, I’ll change my approach mid-stream—maybe by breaking the concept into smaller steps, using a real-world analogy, or incorporating a hands-on activity. This flexibility and quick thinking are forms of creativity that help me connect with my students and make learning more accessible for them.

Redefining Creativity

Through this journey, I’ve come to realize that creativity isn’t limited to traditional art forms. It’s about how you approach problems, ideas, and opportunities in unique ways. For those of us with ADHD, our brains are wired to think differently, and that difference is our strength. Whether it’s solving complex coding challenges, designing engaging lessons, or finding innovative ways to advocate for neurodivergence, creativity takes many forms.

A Message to Others

If you’re like me and don’t see yourself as creative, I encourage you to think about the ways you solve problems, connect with others, or approach challenges. Your creativity might not look like a painting or a novel, but it’s just as valuable.

To explore this topic further, I’ve created a video where I share my personal journey and reflections on ADHD and creativity. You can watch it here. I hope it inspires you to redefine what creativity means to you.

Remember, your creativity—whatever form it takes—is valid and valuable. Let’s celebrate the diverse ways we all bring something unique to the table.
